Change my password

Change or update your email password

There are two places you can change or update your email account password: in Outlook and with your email provider (for example, Office 365, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or Xfinity). You may need to change your password one or both places.

Why are there two places to change my password?

There are two things you need in order to access your email.

An email account with an email provider such as Office 365, Gmail, iCloud, or a corporate Exchange server

A program that can display your email messages and allow you to read, reply to, and organize these email messages

Click Sign-in & security.

Scroll down to Signing in to Google. There you can change your password and then select App passwords to generate a unique password to enter into Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, and Outlook 2010. Gmail requires the use of two-factor authentication and an app password to check your email in Outlook. For more information, see Set up two-factor authentication for Gmail.

Go to the Yahoo website.

Click your name or picture in the upper right corner of the screen, then select Account Info. You may need to click the name of your account on the next screen.

If iCloud requires you to enter a Two-Factor Authentication code, obtain the code from one of your other Apple devices and enter the six digits, then click Trust when iCloud asks you to trust this browser.

Click the drop-down next to your name and picture in the upper right corner of the screen.

At the top of the next screen, click Manage under Apple ID. You may need to enter your Apple ID and password again.

Under Security, click Change Password. and follow the prompts.

When you’re done, scroll down to verify that Two-Factor Authentication is on, then click Generate Password under App-Specific Passwords. For more information about generating a unique password to enter into Outlook 2016, 2013, and 2010, see Set up two-factor authentication for iCloud.

Other email accounts will require you to change your email account password on the website for the account provider. For example, to change the password for an Xfinity account, go to the Xfinity website and follow the prompts. Every email account provider has slightly different steps for changing a password.

Update the password stored in Outlook

To update your password in Outlook, use the following steps.

Note: Outlook can’t change the password with your email provider. In other words, if you forget your Outlook.com password, you’ll first have to see the section Change your Outlook.com password to change the password Outlook.com has for your account, then update the password in Outlook for Windows.

There are two possible ways to update your password in Outlook. The specific steps you need to take depend on your version of Outlook and whether you’re an Office 365 subscriber or purchased Outlook as a standalone application.

If you’re an Office 365 subscriber with monthly updates, use the following steps:

In Outlook, choose File > Account Settings > Update Password.

Update the password or app password and click OK.

If you’re an Office 365 subscriber with semi-annual updates or you have Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, or 2010, or purchased Outlook as a standalone application, use the following steps:

In Outlook, choose File > Account Settings > Account Settings.

Select the email account you want to change, and then choose Change.

In the Change Account window, update your password.

NOTE: POP and IMAP accounts will not provide this option if your entry point is File > Account Settings > Account Settings. If that is the case go to File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles, Select Emails Accounts, then select the email account you want to change, and then choose Change. In the Change Account window, update your password.

Does my email account need an app password?

If you use Outlook to send and receive email from your Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, Apple, Outlook.com, or @me.com accounts, you may not use your regular email account password to set up these accounts. These email providers may require you to use two-factor authentication and an app password. This is a one-time password that you enter in place of your regular account password when setting up your account for the first time.

For more information, see the sections on setting up two-factor authentication for Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud.

To update your password in Outlook for Mac, use the following steps.

On the Tools tab, select Accounts.

In the left pane, select the account you want to change the password for.

In the right pane, enter a new password in the Password box.

Close the Accounts window. Outlook will save the password automatically.

    Changing Internet username and passwords

Often, most ISPs allow you to change your password whenever it’s needed. However, they often do not allow the account username to be changed.

Because every Internet service provider and web host is different, we suggest you contact the company for additional help with changing your username or password.

    Changing online forums and accounts

Like the Computer Hope forums, most forums allow the user to change their password only through the profile or account settings. However, most companies do not allow you to change your username. Usually, you must create a new account to do this. If you need additional help with changing your username or password on another website, we suggest you contact the company or webmaster in control of that website.

If you cannot access an online account because you do not know the username or password, look for a link on the account login page for retrieving a forgotten username or password. This option may be able to help in determining what your username or password is or help in resetting your account password.

How to Change Your Password in Windows

Change your password in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP

There are several very good reasons you might want to change the password to your Windows computer. Personally, I’d like to think you want to change your password simply because you know it’s a smart thing to do every so often to keep your PC secure.

Of course, another good reason to change your password is if your current password is too easy to guess. or maybe too hard to remember!

Regardless of the reason, changing your password is very easy, no matter which version of Windows you have. You can change your password in Microsoft Windows via the User Accounts applet in Control Panel.

However, the steps involved to change your password differ somewhat depending on which operating system you’re using, so be sure to take note of those differences when they’re called out below.

See What Version of Windows Do I Have? if you’re not sure which of those several versions of Windows is installed on your computer.

    Windows 10 and Windows 8

Using the search bar, type sign in options and then choose Sign-in options from the list of results.

If that doesn’t work, open Control Panel, choose User Accounts (Windows 10) or User Accounts and Family Safety (Windows 8), then the User Accounts link, followed by the Make changes to my account in PC Settings, and finally Sign-in options on the left.

Under the Password section, click or tap Change.

Enter your current password in the first text box and then click Next.

For Windows 10 users, enter your new password twice to verify that you’ve typed it correctly. You can optionally type a password hint, too, which will help remind you of your password should you forget it when logging in.

For Windows 8 users, enter your current password once more on the Change your Microsoft account password screen, and then type your new password twice in the provided text boxes.

    Click the Next button.

Click Finish to exit the Change your password or You changed your password screen.

You can now exit any other open Settings, PC settings, and Control Panel windows.

Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Click on the User Accounts and Family Safety link if you’re using Windows 7.

If you’re using Windows XP (or some versions of Windows Vista), this link is instead called User Accounts.

If you’re viewing the Large icons, Small icons, or Classic view of Control Panel, you won’t see this link. Simply click on the User Accounts icon and proceed to Step 4.

Click on the User Accounts link.

In the Make changes to your user account area of the User Accounts window, click the Change your password link.

For Windows XP users, look instead for the or pick an account to change section, and click your user account, and then click Change my password on the following screen.

In the first text box, enter your current password.

In the next two text boxes, enter the password you would like to start using.

Entering the password twice helps to make sure that you typed your new password correctly.

In the final text box, you’re asked to enter a password hint.

This step is optional but I highly recommend that you use it. If you try logging in to Windows but enter the wrong password, this hint will display, which hopefully will jog your memory.

Click on the Change password button to confirm your changes.

You can now close the User Accounts window and any other Control Panel windows.

    Tips and More Information

Now that your Windows password has been changed, you must use your new password to log in to Windows from this point forward.

Trying to change your password in Windows (because you forgot it) but can’t get into Windows (again, because you forgot your password)? Most people use a Windows password recovery program to crack or reset the password but you should also see our complete list of ways to find lost passwords in Windows for some other options as well.

Another option is to create a Windows password reset disk. While not a required part of changing your password, I highly recommend that you do this.

You do not need to create a new password reset disk if you already have one. Your previously created password reset disk will work no matter how many times you change your Windows password.
